Labelling solutions
With dedication, passion, ideas and skill, around 800 employees have made LIQUI MOLY what it is today:
A world-renowned manufacturer of high-quality lubricants, motor oils, additives, vehicle care products, chemical repair aids as well as service, adhesive and sealing products. Founded in 1957, LIQUI MOLY develops and produces exclusively in Germany.
There, the company is the undisputed market leader for additives and is repeatedly voted the best oil brand by readers of the largest German automotive magazines. The company, managed by its owner Ernst Prost, sells its products in over 120 countries and generated sales of 489 million euros in 2016.
The delivery range comprises more than 4,000 articles. More than 70,000 cans are filled and packed daily on five production lines in 2-shift operation.
In order to optimise the labelling processes for aerosol cans and other cylindrical containers, the search for a new, high-performance labelling system had been underway for some time.
Suitable technical solutions were presented to the team led by Messrs Schrade, Pietzschmann and Bock during the last INTERPACK at the BBK Etikettier- und Sondermaschinenbau GmbH stand.
A new labelling system for LIQUI MOLY was to meet these requirements:
Labelling of (round) cans with different geometries. Most containers have flanges on the top and bottom edges.
Single-layer 360° labelling: The single-layer label is to be wrapped once completely around the cylindrical container.
Multi-layer 360° labelling: Two-layer booklet labels (peel-off labels) are to be wrapped once completely around the cylindrical container.
Parts labelling: the parts label is attached to the cylindrical container starting at a defined position. It extends over a range of <360° (e.g. 90°). Either the weld seam or a color contrast (e.g. white text field on colored can) serves as marking for the starting point of the part labeling. In both cases, precise labelling is required, which must be able to be switched on and off.
Label formats up to 250mm high
Fast label and format changeover, because fifteen to twenty changes have to be made per day.
Cycle rates up to 50 pieces/min
LIQUI MOLY decided to purchase the fully automatic VRM-2DS labeling system because it met all the requirements in every respect. One of the big plus points was that the VRM-DS2 does not require any format sets. Adaptation to different products is possible steplessly and without tools.
After delivery and successful commissioning of the system, Mr. Pietzschmann (project management) and Mr. Bock (production management) commented positively on the experiences made with BBK:
"The decisive factors for the purchase decision were functionality and price. BBK fully met our expectations.
We certify that this labelling system is highly reliable in terms of availability, performance, set-up time and precise weld seam/color detection. Compared to the semi-automatic labelling system previously used, significantly higher quantities are now possible with less personnel. One person is sufficient to operate and monitor the system. With regard to maintenance and care, it can be said that only minimal effort is required (e.g. cleaning the sensors)".
It should also be mentioned that BBK's technicians are quickly on site when needed and find sensible, cost-effective solutions for us.
